Yep

Atrios on the New Yorker Cover:

I certainly don't think that the New Yorker cover is the biggest deal in the world, but the basic reason I find it problematic is that I look at it and I think, "Yes, well, that's what the Right says about the Obamas pretty much daily." It channels what they say, but they forgot to add the funny. Hamas loves Obama, he hates the flag and America, he's a Muslim, Michelle Obama is a black militant, etc. It isn't funny to me because I read this crap every day all day. This crap isn't just on obscure wingnut blogs, it's everywhere. G. Gordon Liddy is thrilled.
For those of you who don't know what he is talking about check out this link. (I really don't want to have to look at it all the time so I'm not posting it.)

it only fuels the fire for those who get their info in a glance...but I don't think many are glancing ...and those that are reading the New Yorker get whole satirical cartoon medium. I think it is hilarious actually and in the end I think getting all this out of the way now...being as obvious as possible NOW...will diffuse it all as we get closer to the election. Any of these stereo-types will be nothing new at all.
A sense of humor about this would be the best medicine from the left...and it would be completely unexpected as we have a bit of a rep for freaking out about stereotypes.

I'm with the otters. Anyone on the New Yorker mailing list *should* get the joke right away. I mean, it's not like he has a bomb in his turban, right? ;)

It's like only blacks can make black jokes.
The real joke is to think the NY'er editors did not foresee the fallout when their cover made it into mainstream media, sending that hilarious joke to redneckland.

I almost cancelled my subscription when it came in the mail this week...and it's not as if The New Yorker can afford to lose subscribers....I do see otter and Mark's point, but I'm not sure if I think it's okay...my first reaction was anger and annoyance and a sense of just "inappropriate!!!".
