Whatta Day

I helped proctor an exam today at work. I actually read the entire Paul Auster novel, Oracle Night. Not my favorite of his books, but not my least favorite either. Like many of my favorite authors he was introduced to me by Signe in Norway.

Last time I proctored I read, Eat Pray Love, probably my favorite book I read in 2007.

My goal for next year is to read more fiction. My reading in the last years has been heavy on the politics and light on the novels. What was the best thing you read in 2007?

UPDATE: Proving my point about Signe, Maite in the comments suggests the book Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz-Zafon. Signe actually sent me that book last year for Christmas! It really is an amazing book.

I also read Eat, Pray, Love this year, and loved it. Right now I'm reading some of Shirley Jackson's nonfiction. It's a two-fer book with her Life Among The Savages and Raising Demons.

The best I've read this year? Hard to say. My short-term memory is shot. ;-)

Get Shadow of the Wind by Ruiz-Zafon. It's a beautiful novel, not a 2007 read, but my favorite for 2006. Didn't want to say eat, pray, love as well :)

Such a hard question!!! For almost 9 years, I have kept a list of the books I read in an Excel file. Its great to have at times like this. Shadow of the Wind was the first of 2007 because Signe sent it to Lauren for Xmas and I was visiting. I liked it but it probably lost something in translation.

Favorite fiction: Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See.

Favorite non-fiction: My Life in France by Julia Child. Also On Gold Mountain by Lisa See. I had to read it to find out how a blond author knew so much about China.

Favorite Audio book: Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen.

And as an avid reader of this blog, I had to read Eat, Pray, Love and I loved it too. Especially the eating in Italy!

(Sorry to be so long winded!)

I think you might enjoy The Abstinence Teacher--it's got girls' soccer, politics and religion, and a little romance in one book!
