Smoky Tuesday

REUTERS/NASA/Handout (UNITED STATES)

The county is still burning. Seems like this winds have died down a bit and maybe the burning is not spreading quite as quickly as yesterday. However the Santa Anas are not over and the fire is far from being contained. No school for the kids this whole week. My boss was nice enough to extend an invitation for me to bring the kids to work tomorrow. Eduardo might actually be able to get some work done after being "Mr. Mom" today and much of last week too since Pablo was sick.

500,000 have had to leave their houses. We really are not in any real danger of having to leave our house. It could happen, but we live pretty close to central San Diego so if our house goes it will be a catastrophe on the scale of Katrina.

We got to see the Governator for the second day in a row touring the "refugees" at Qualcomm Stadium. A Swedish student of mine could not believe how much of the Press Conference by politicians is devoted to thanking each other. She said that Sweedish people would never tolerate that kind of politics during a disaster. It reminded me of my first time in Mexico watching a "Public Service" commercial which was basically the President at the time, Zedillo, being nice to poor people in Mexico. I was amazed that basically a political ad could be played as if it was a public service, and was sure that could never happen in the US. Wrong.
