On Sunday night my mom called to tell me that her best friend of 25 years and fill in grandma for my sister and I, Lucy Homstad, appeared to be near death. Lucy was quite a bit older than my mom and had been ill for a while so it did not come as a surprise to us. As I was leaving work Monday I saw I had a missed call from my mom and knew immediately what she would tell me.
I have wanted to "blog" about her all week, but didn't know what to write. Lucy really was an amazing woman. I wish I could think of something really deep and meaningful to write, but I can't (hopefully yet). I will pass along the poem she gave my mom five years ago with the words, "Memorial Service" written on the top. My mom will read it, as requested, during her service on Monday:
SONG
by: Christina Rossetti (1830-1894)
When I am dead, my dearest,
Sing no sad songs for me;
Plant thou no roses at my head,
Nor shady cypress tree:
Be the green grass above me
With showers and dewdrops wet;
And if thou wilt, remember,
And if thou wilt, forget.
I shall not see the shadows,
I shall not feel the rain;
I shall not hear the nightingale
Sing on, as if in pain;
And dreaming through the twilight
That doth not rise nor set,
Haply I may remember,
And haply may forget.
