I am almost finished reading RFK Jr.'s great article in Rolling Stone about the stealing of the Ohio vote in 2004.
For the last hour one question has been going through my head over and over. Why the hell did Kerry concede so early? He specifically promised that every vote would be counted this time, there was already a lot of talk about fishy stuff happening all over the country. But still, Kerry conceded because he was told there was no way to get enough votes to swing Ohio. We knew Florida was stolen, we knew the media doesn't really give a shit about it, so why wouldn't he at least shine some light on voting problems while he had the chance? He should have known that once he conceded the press would turn to Bush and all of his "political capital" right away.
In the end I don't think Kerry could fight for himself. He didn't fight back against the Swift Boaters and not fighting the Ohio vote was even more tragic.
I think most conventional wisdom says he was already thinking about '08 and didn't want to be regarded as a "poor loser". Maybe that is the explanation. Well if you ask me he was a poor loser- and one who I feel really betrayed all of us who really invested a lot of time, money (that we didn't really have...) and most importantly hope in his campaign. I mean my friend Sam and his kids spent hours and hours carving a God damn John Kerry Halloween Pumpkin for God Sake! (true story- hey Sam if you have a photo you should send it so I can post it.) It was actually very cool.
